At least 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national projects.
